About Me
Hi there! 👋
I’m Matthew Bailin. Thanks so much for visiting my page. I’m a teacher and tutor, and I love helping people learn about almost anything.
Actually, scratch that. What I really love is helping people learn how to learn. I love helping people answer their own questions. I love watching someone who didn’t think they were good at something become their own mentor.
I’ve been teaching for a little more than ten years now. I have worked all over the world and have probably helped more than 10,000 students by this point in my career.
I am ready to help you ace your exam, get into a top program, gain a new certification, and generally become your best self.
Let’s get started.
I am here to help.
Get ahead with better grades, higher test scores, or even tech certifications. Knowledge production is what I do. 😉
I can help with just about anything that is knowledge-based. Are you studying for Physics, coding a database, prepping for a high-stakes exam, even getting a CompTIA certification or two? I can help with that. My resume covers more than 10 years of full-time teaching experience and spans nearly any academic and tech subject you can imagine. From Calculus to Creative Writing, I have likely tutored a student to great success.
The great thing about working with a “generalist” like myself is that I see the big picture.* I see the larger story of each subject I work with and can get you that story so that you can “think” in your field of studying and begin to make sense of what you are learning.
The skills we cover in our sessions will therefore extend to your studies in college or in industry, as you will be able to answer your own questions with precision and confidence.
I have helped more than 10,000 people from all walks of life succeed. People as diverse as medical technicians and stockbrokers have worked with me, and have found me to be direct, unassuming, personable, and really freaking smart. I get you what you need to know, as quickly as I can get it to you. You then pass this stage of your life and move on to better things.
If all of that sounds interesting to you, come work with me. I promise I will make things interesting.
*Not to brag or anything. 😁
FAQ
The general MO of a tutoring session with me is to meet on Zoom for one or two hours. We record the session, and can use the Zoom whiteboard, Excalidraw (a free drawing tool that I think is awesome), slides, or just plain-old conversation to get your learning going. Lessons are as structured or as unstructured as you’ll need so that you learn in a way that makes sense to you.
As I have mentioned, I can tutor nearly any subject, and can also help for the kinds of programming typically gone over in high school and college (Java, Javascript, Python, and Typescript would be the most common languages here).
Off the top of my head, I have tutored or taught AP Calculus, AP Statistics, AP Micro/Macroeconomics, AP Physics A/B/C, IB Maths AI/AA SL/HL, IB Physics SL/HL, AP Language and Composition, AP US History, AP World History, IB Economics SL/HL, Organic Chemistry, Chemistry I, Calculus III, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, A-level Maths/Further Maths, A-level Economics, A-level Physics, a whole bunch of IGCSE classes I’m not even going to bother listing out, and even a Philosophy class (on Descartes, but I’m a big fan of Kant, Hegel, Foucault, and Nietzsche too!)
If I still haven’t yet managed to tackle a subject on your list, just ask me.
The answer to this question will depend greatly on what you are studying and how ambitious your goals are. Two one-hour sessions a week is usually a good place to start.
Absolutely. One of the most important features of my lessons is that we figure out what you need before anything else. The structure is kept lightweight on purpose to allow the lessons to morph into what you need from me.
I have worked with students who were diagnosed with ADHD, Bipolar disorder, and autism, among other conditions. Everyone is different. Your “disability” doesn’t define you, and as a matter of fact, it is my job as an educator to meet your needs while still giving you the space needed to thrive. I have found that, above all else, staying relaxed and patient, and being open to adjust at a moment’s notice, really help in this regard.
Email me at mbailin@protonmail.com and I will be happy to send the recording to you.
I normally am able to source past papers, official exams, or some other such source of real questions for use in our sessions. My goal in these sessions is to get you practice with as close to the real event as we can get. If we can get you answering these questions correct (and even knowing why you’re right), then I am confident you will be able to do well on exam day.
I am aware that in the fray of our hectic lives, accidents happen.
I am happy to provide a grace period for one lesson that is either late or was missed. If you were late for this lesson, I am happy to go over to make up the late start (time permitting), or I can tack on the extra time to a future lesson. Likewise, a missed lesson can be rescheduled at no charge to you.
For any future late starts, the time will be deducted from the remaining minutes in the session. No further time will be provided.
Furthermore, any future missed sessions will need to be rebooked at an additional 50% of our agreed upon fee. You will also be unable to request a refund should you miss a session more than one time.
Refunds in private tutoring are an especially tricky issue as, unlike some other goods that physically exist, cannot be “given back” once they have been purchased and used.
The honest truth is that when you choose to hire me for my services, you are purchasing my time. While I am grateful for the opportunity to serve you, please understand that this time is permanently used up once you have booked it. The time I have given you can not be used for the myriad other things I am involved with.
My first piece of advice with respect to this matter is to think carefully on whether you believe I can help you. I have done my best to paint an accurate picture of what I can do, so please only choose me if you feel with 100% confidence that our lessons will be impactful.
My second piece of advice is to inform you, regrettably, that in most cases I will be unable to issue you a refund. I simply am not in a position to offer my time under the possibility that my time will not be compensated for.
However, there may be an exceptional circumstance where a refund may be warranted. You are welcome to send me an email to mbailin@protonmail, and I will be happy to review these situations on a case-by-case basis. Please note that I will almost certainly be asking for documentation (such as, for instance, your official exam results) and that I will be looking closely at our past exam results before making a final determination on what I can do. Even under these circumstances, I cannot promise that you will get the outcome that you want or even any compensation at all.
